Hiram W. Byers, 81, well-known pioneer Ellis county resident, diedat11 o'clock this morning at his home, 104 East Eighteenth street. Mr.Byers became ill ten days ago, but had appeared to be improving untilMonday night when his condition took a turn for the worse and becamecritical. He had suffered from ill health for two years.
Born in 1856
Hiram Westover Byers was born March 27, 1856 at Salem, Ia., the son ofMr. and Mrs. John Byers. He lived at Salem until he was 21 years old andthen worked in northwest Iowa. In 1879 with the families of JamesMcIntosh, the father of Mrs. John O'Loughlin and Jake Byers, Mr. Byerscame to Ellis county. The party traveled in covered wagons. He livedhere for a year and in 1880 went with James McIntosh to Colorado to workon a railroad. Mr. Byers also worked in Colorado silver mines beforecoming back to Ellis county in 1892 to buy a farm northeast of Hays.Later, with his brother, John, he bought the farm which is now theMatthew Truan place and farmed there until in 1895 he purchased the farmhe owned at the time of his death, twelve and a half miles northeastofHays.
Married in 1900
Mr. Byers was married September of 1900 to Miss Anna Messer, a residentof New York state and the couple lived on the farm northeast of Haysuntil 1919 when Mrs. Byers died. In the spring of 1920 he came to Haysto make his home with Mr. and Mrs. George Balls.
On Sept. 30, 1928, Mr. Byers was married at Moulton, Ia., to Miss EdnaWalker of Moulton, and since that time had made his home in Hays.
Mr. Byers was the last member of a family of thirteen brothers andsisters and is survived only by the widow, a sister-in-law, Mrs. AnnaByers of South Haven, Kas., and a number of nephews and nieces. Funeralarrangements had not been made late this afternoon and will be announcedlater in the News.
