Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver "Butch" Goldsmith, 93, of Salem, died Monday, May 9, 2005, atHenry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Nov. 24, 1911, in Salem, he was the son of John R. and Mary ArmerGoldsmith. On Jan. 6, 1951, he married Beulah Bailey Watson in Salem. Shedied June 2, 2003.

Mr. Goldsmith worked for W.E. Conrad Feed Store from 1931 to 1939, thenworked for the Salem Post Office. In 1946 he returned to the Salem PostOffice, transferred to Fort Madison Post Office, and in 1965, wasappointed postmaster of the Salem Post Office, where he retired in 1972.

He was a 1929 graduate of Salem High School. He was an Army veteran,entering the service in 1943. He loved gardening, motorcycle riding,trapping, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include one son, Loren Watson of Salem; one daughter, MarthaPratt of Salem; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sistersand one brother.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Beatty Funeral Home inMount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Goldsmith will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at SalemCongregational Church, with the Rev. Harold Dorsey officiating. Burialwith full military honors by Henry County Honor Guard will be in SalemSouth Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Salem Congregational Church.
