Rachel Marshall , daughter of John and Anna Marshall, was bornSept. 22nd, 1814 in the state of North Carolina. In 1821 the familymoved to Henry Co., Ind., where at the age of 16 Rachel was joined inmarriage with Mordecai Bond. Nine Children blessed this marriage, onlythree of who are living, vis. Lovinia - Mrs. Wm. Reynolds, of Wesleyn,Neb., Eunice - Mrs. Ezra Hockett, of Clay Co., Iowa, and Wm. Bond, ofnear Salem, Iowa. They moved to Iowa in 1846, and in 1849 when typhoidfever was epidemic and so many were taken away by its ravages, MordecaiBond was among the number and the wife and mother was left to strugglewith the demands of her family of small children, alone in a newcountry. Yet amid the privation of pioneer life, she bravely battled andsuccessfully met the necessities of her family until 1864, when she wasunited in marriage with Robt. W. Bunker, with whom she pleasantly liveduntil 1869, when by his death she was again left a widow. Since then shehas made her home with her son, Wm. Bond, who was left a widower with twosmall children, to these the grandmother became mother. To this care wasadded that of her afflicted daughter Libbie Bond, who for more than 18years was confined to here chair. In all these cares andresponsibilities she maintained a steadfast Christian life, having been alife-long member of Friends church. Funeral services were held at theChestnut Hill Church conducted by Rev. Levi Gregory, assisted by Rev.Pool and Tamar Maddock.
A host of friends and neighbors were present to manifest their love andsympathy. The remains were laid to rest in the Friends' Cemetery inSalem.
