The 3rd of 6 children of Perry Byers and Lena Taylor, , Thelma was the first cousin twice-removed on the father's side of Jay Hannah, was born in Mt. Pleasant, IA on Nov 16, 1919 and. She married Dale Smith (with whom she had 3 surviving children Barry Wendell, Janet Sue and Kevin Lindsay) in Tipton, IA on Jun 5, 1941.
She died on Aug 18, 2005 in Winchester, VA and was buried in National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA after Aug 18, 2005.

THELMA D. SMITH
Thelma D. Smith, 85, of 290 Westminster Canterbury Drive, Winchester,formerly of Arlington and Fairfax, died Thursday at her home.
The funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Omps Funeral Home,Amherst Chapel, in Winchester. A graveside service will be held Monday at2:30 p.m. at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.
Mrs. Smith was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She was employed by theNational Park Service as a costumer and demonstrator at Arlington Houseand Sully Plantation in Fairfax. She was a member of Trinity PresbyterianChurch in Arlington and president of the PEO Sisterhood. She was thewifeof the late Dale H. Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Barry W. Smith of Winchester and Kevin L. Smithof Charlotte, N.C. a daughter, Janet S. Hamner of Rock Cave, W.Va.;twosisters, Darlene Nevins of Warner, N.H., and Carol E. Slach of WestBranch, Iowa; three brothers, Vernon F. Byers of West Branch, Cleo C.Byers of Los Alamos, N.M., and Leland F. Byers of McAllen, Texas; sixgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeralhome.
