Funeral Is Held
Melvin McVey, son of Marion and Charity Scarborough McVey, was bornSeptember 3, 1883 at Salem, Ia., where he lived his entire life. Hetookover the responsibility of the farm and the care of his widowed motherand sister. He was widely known as a man of character and integrityandwas frequently consulted by men of his community on business transactions.
Mr. McVey has been in failing health for the past five years and passedaway at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, June 7, in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Ft.Madison. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother andtwinsisters.
Left to mourn his passing is his aged mother, who is a patient in St.Francis Hospital, Burlington; two brothers, Guy J. McVey and Forest L.McVey, Fort Madison; a sister, Eunice E. McVey at home and otherrelatives and friends.
The memorial services were held in the Methodist church, Tuesday at2:30 p. m., the sermon by Mrs. Bessie F. Collins and Rev. Griffinassisted with the services in the prayer and scripture reading. Thesongs, "Near the Cross." and "I Have Heard of a Land" were sung by W. H.Johnson, Rev. Griffin, A. C. Wolf, H. C. Garretson accompanied by MissWilma Hallowell, Mrs. Ellis Hall, of Fort Madison, was the lady assistantof the funeral arrangements and the flowers in charge of Miss MelvinaMogel and Mrs. Myrtle Schwarz. Interment was in the East cemetery andpallbearers were: the honorary bearers, A. C. Wolf, Clarence Peterson,Clyde Bunker, L. A. Bunker, Edgar Conard and the active bearers wereDewey Hawbaker, Ed Watson, Dale Cammack, Paul Grey, Lenore Walingford,Robert Frary.
