Balls, Fred and June
Fred was born on a farm fourteen miles northwest of Hays on February 14, 1918, the third son of George and Clara (McIntosh ) Balls. Their farm was completely destroyed in the May 20, 1918, tornado. November of 1918 they moved to 310 West 16th Street, Hays. Fred started school in the first grade in the old rock school house on the corner of 12th and Ash. Then he went to Lincoln School when it was built and to juniorand senior high schools and graduated in 1937. He started working as janitor for the United Telephone Company in 1936, which later became S. W. Bell Telephone Co. Fred attended Fort Hays State College for two and one-half years, taking selective courses in electronic engineering to benefithim in his career with the telephone company. During World War II he worked on telephone construction which covered the State of Kansas. He returned to Hays as an Installer Repairman, later moved to Downs then Smith Center as Combination Man, then back to Hays as Telegraph Repeaterman, thento Colby as Supervisor over most of the telephone offices in northwest Kansas. Fred retired from Southwestern Bell in May, 1980, with 43 years, nine month, six days of service with the telephone company.
On December 25, 1939, Fred married June Doane. June moved to Hayswith her parents Fred and Mabel Doane and her brother Dale when she was in the fifth grade. She attended Washington Grade School, Picken Junior and Senior High School until it closed in 1935. She graduated from HaysHigh School in 1936 and attended Fort Hays State College one year. She kept books for her father who owned the Doane Plumbing and Heating Co.
Fred and June have two children. Jerry Dean was born December 4, 1943, at St. Anthony Hospital, hays. Jerry attended grade school in Downsand Smith Center and graduated form Smith Center High School. Jerry went to Fort Hays State College two years, taking a pre-engineering course, then transferred to Kansas State University, Manhattan, where he graduated with an Electronics Engineering Degree. He went to work for Bendix Corporation as an electronics engineer and furthered his education at the University of Missouri with a Masters Degree in electronics. Donna Jean was born September 28, 1956, at Smith County Hospital, Smith Center, Kansas. Donna started kindergarten in Smith Center, finished kindergarten and first grade in Lincoln Grade School, then attended Wilson Grade School, Hays. When in second semester of fourth grade she moved to Colby, Kansas, and finished her schooling in Colby, graduation from Colby High School. She attended Colby Junior College two years, transferred to Fort Hays State College and graduated with a degree in Education. She is now teaching in Fowler Grade School, Fowler, Kansas.
AS of this writing, October, 1990, Fred and June live in Colby. Jerry Balls, his wife Cathy and their son Brian live in Blue Springs Missouri. Donna (Balls) Norman, her husband Bill who is farming, their two sons Brett and Charley live near Fowler, Kansas. submitted by Fred and June Balls
