The twin brother of James and the 7th of 9 children of William Godden and Sarah Hawkins, , James was the 6 times great-grandfather of Stephanie Hardesty (née Teten), was born in Earl Stoke, Wiltshire, England on Nov 25, 1789 along with his twin brother James and married Ann Lanham (with whom he had 16 children: Jane, Thomas, James, Maria, John, Elizabeth, John, William, Mary, George, George, Richard, Richard, Charles Henry, Charles Henry and Sarah Ann) in Market Lavington, Wiltshire, England on Oct 20, 1818.

He died on Mar 15, 1845 in Erlestoke, Wiltshire, England.
