Howard Humphrey

Howard W. Humphrey, 79, of Burlington, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July17, 2005, at his home.

Born Feb. 13, 1926, in Salem, he was the son of Bert Litton and MaggieHudson Humphrey. On June 4, 1969, he married Billie Yvonne Walker inTucson, Ariz. [I believe this is wrong. According to my mother, firsthe married Billie Jean Reece and had no children, then Dorothy DarleneGiberson. -Jay Weston Hannah 25 Nov 2005]

Mr. Humphrey was an inspector for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for20years and retired from the Burlington school system.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, attaining the rank of seaman firstclass, and Coast Guard veteran. He was a member of Riverside BaptistChurch, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Heenjoyed reading and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Glenda Lowry of Bloomington,Ill., and Connie Sue Walker of Chicago; one son, Bryan Humphrey ofBurlington; two stepsons, Terry Ryner of Burlington and Jerry Ryner ofWest Burlington; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and threenieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, onegranddaughter and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel,where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Humphrey will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Prugh'sChapel, with Pastor Charles Stevens officiating. Burial with militaryrites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52,Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be in AspenGrove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
