Balls, Fred and June
Fred was born on a farm fourteen miles northwest of Hays on February14, 1918, the third son of George and Clara (McIntosh ) Balls. Theirfarm was completely destroyed in the May 20, 1918, tornado. November of1918 they moved to 310 West 16th Street, Hays. Fred started school inthe first grade in the old rock school house on the corner of 12th andAsh. Then he went to Lincoln School when it was built and to juniorandsenior high schools and graduated in 1937. He started working as janitorfor the United Telephone Company in 1936, which later became S. W. BellTelephone Co. Fred attended Fort Hays State College for two and one-halfyears, taking selective courses in electronic engineering to benefithimin his career with the telephone company. During World War II he workedon telephone construction which covered the State of Kansas. He returnedto Hays as an Installer Repairman, later moved to Downs then Smith Centeras Combination Man, then back to Hays as Telegraph Repeaterman, thentoColby as Supervisor overly most of the telephone offices in northwestKansas. Fred retired from Southwestern Bell in May, 1980, with 43 years,nine month, six days of service with the telephone company.
On December 25, 1939, Fred married June Doane. June moved to Hayswithher parents Fred and Mabel Doane and her brother Dale when she was in thefifth grade. She attended Washington Grade School, Picken Junior andSenior High School until it closed in 1935. She graduated from HaysHighSchool in 1936 and attended Fort Hays State College one year. She keptbooks for her father who owned the Doane Plumbing and Heating Co.
Fred and June have two children. Jerry Dean was born December 4, 1943,at St. Anthony Hospital, hays. Jerry attended grade school in DownsandSmith Center and graduated form Smith Center High School. Jerry went toFort Hays State College two years, taking a pre-engineering course, thentransferred to Kansas State University, Manhattan, where he graduatedwith an Electronics Engineering Degree. He went to work for BendixCorporation as an electronics engineer and furthered his education atthe University of Missouri with a Masters Degree in electronics. DonnaJean was born September 28, 1956, at Smith County Hospital, SmithCenter, Kansas. Donna started kindergarten in Smith Center, finishedkindergarten and first grade in Lincoln Grade School, then attendedWilson Grade School, Hays. When in second semester of fourth grade shemoved to Colby, Kansas, and finished her schooling in Colby, graduationfrom Colby High School. She attended Colby Junior College two years,transferred to Fort Hays State College and graduated with a degree inEducation. She is now teaching in Fowler Grade School, Fowler, Kansas.
AS of this writing, October, 1990, Fred and June live in Colby. JerryBalls, his wife Cathy and their son Brian live in Blue Springs Missouri.Donna (Balls) Norman, her husband Bill who is farming, their two sonsBrett and Charley live near Fowler, Kansas. submitted by Fred and JuneBalls.
