Elma Scarborough, daughter of John L. and Eunice (Hiatt) Scarborough, was born near Salem, Iowa, July 9, 1854. She grew to womanhood in that vicinity and was married March 29, 1872 to Joseph W. Griffin of Pilot grove.
After residing on a farm there for a few years, they removed to Douglas county, Kas., where they lived for about seven years. Then they returned to Lee county, Iowa, and in 1888 sold out their farming interests there and settled on a farm in Hardin county, Iowa, where they lived for ten years. In 1898 they returned to Douglas county, whereMr. griffin died in 1914. She is survived by two children, Mrs. Mary wing of Vancouver, Wash. and Seth T. Mrs. Griffin had been in poor health for a great many years buther life has been one of service for others with apparently never a thought of self and never a word of complaint. A noble and successful woman, from the standpoint of a christian, has gone to her reward. She wasa livelong member of the Friends church and bore all her sufferings with true christian fortitude. She had just returned this fall from a visit to her old home in Iowa.
The end came to Mrs. Griffin on Tuesday, October 24, after she had been confined to bed only about eight days.
The funeral was held at the home of her son, S. T. Griffin. A large number of friends attended to pay the last respect to her noble life. The schools were closed for the afternoon. Rev. B. A. Gessner had charge of the services. A quartet sang Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, Abide With Me, No Night There, and at the grave Asleep in Jesus. Burial was at Oak Hill cemetery.
