MRS. J. M. ARMER
Maria, daughter of George and Mary Gamble, was born in Johnstown, Pa., November 16, 1833. When a small child her parents moved to Indiana county of the same state where she grew to womanhood.
She was married to J. M. Armer on the 7th of October, 1856. To this union eight children were born, five are still living, George, having died some time ago, and Mrs. Wright but recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Armer lived in Pennsylvania during the first seven years of their married life and thence they came to Henry county, Iowa and began farming on their place near Donaldson chapel in Jackson township. Moving from here to a farm near the river where they resided for 16 years, then retiring to their home in Salem. Their farm life covered a period of 40 years.
Maria, as then known was converted in a meeting held by the circuit rider in her home neighborhood when she was 14 years old. She united with the M. E. church in which fellowship she has lived 75 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Armer have known each other for over 75 years. They have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. At her death Sister Armer was 89 years 4 mos. and 27 days of age. Mrs. Armer was a lovely type of womanhood; pleasing and quiet, patient and caretaking, a devoted mother and loving companion. She leaves an aged grief stricken companion, one son, R. M. Armer; four daughters, Mrs. Ellen M. Long and Mrs. J. R .Goldsmith of Salem, Mrs. Clara E. Harshbarger of Mt. Pleasant, and Laura A. Armer of Salem, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her departure.
Funeral services were held in the M. E .church in Salem, by Rev. James, Rev. Pool and Rev. Bishop of Mt. Pleasant assisting. A large numberof people came to the funeral to express their sympathy, among them seven ministers of the gospel. Her remains were laid to rest beside her son in the Methodist cemetery in the eastern part of town.
