LONG
The death of John Long which occurred Saturday came as a distinct surprise to Salem people as he had seemed to be in his usual health.
Death was caused by neuralgia of the heart.
John Long, son of Benjamin and Matilda Long, was born near Salem Sept. 7, 1857 and spent his entire life in and around Salem. He was married to Ellen May Armor Oct. 30, 1878 and to them eight children were born, of whom five survive: Eva Matilda Trueblood of Mt. Pleasant, Ida Maria Ford of Madison ,Grover Jay Long of Salem, Frances May Frazier of Madison,and John Byron Long of Salem.
Mr. Long spent his early life on the farm, later moving to Salem where he engaged in the implement business. He became a member of the Methodist Protestant church at the age of 36 but after moving into the Cedar neighborhood he united with the Friends church and spent much time in church work, being recorded a minister and at the time of his death he was a trustee of the church.
Besides his children he leaves his wife and two sisters.
The funeral was held Monday at the Friends church conducted by the pastor. Interment was in the Friends cemetery.
